Going…….Going…….GONE!

After less than 24 hours of changing the tenure of my Twitter background sale from one month to seven days I have an advertiser!

Who is the lucky advertiser?

Actually it is Twittad. No surprise really though, I tweet and blog about Twitter so a provider of a Twitter service would be the obvious match for my profile.

Is the few dollars gained worth losing the personal branding that was displayed on my Twitter background?

Hmmm… not really sure on that one yet, maybe time will tell. I have however already learnt a little about how to sell a Twitter background successfully with Twittad.

1. From monitoring the profiles recently sold, I can safely say a seven day tenure is likley to sell quicker than longer tenures like a month.

2. Make sure you complete your profile in as much detail as possible to give advertisers a good idea of what sort of tweep you are and what sort of tweeps you attract to your Twitter page.

3. Ensure whilst your background is up for sale you are tweeting regularly on any interests or topics you stated in your Twittad profile.

4. Do not expect to much. Although Twittad gives you an estimated value (via whatsyourtweetworth.com), I am unsure to how close to this value you could actually achieve. My estimate was $130 odd per month, but have sold at only $30 odd per month. I will continue to raise this price through out this live experiment to try and find an optimal asking price.

5. Remember you can always turn down offers. But as with all things, finding a balance between holding out for the best possible outcome and just being plain stubborn is very important.

What improvements would I like to see?

To start with, the option for tweeps to make offers to advertisers would surely speed up the process of finding a buyer. Advertisers could have thear own profiles listed, stating legnth of tenure, budget guide, and area of interest. I personally would like to be able to offer multiple advertisers sections of my background which would also enable me to keep some space for personal branding.

What I really like about Twittad is the simple, easy to use interface. This will for sure make it possible for the twitter mainstream users to participate. As long as you can type your name in a form, you can offer your background for sale. This means Twittad should be able to attract people to use their service who would not normally be interested in making money from their online activity.

What next for the ‘Twitter How To Live Experiment’ ?

In the next post I will give some more feedback as I attempt to increase the value of my background. I will be letting you in on one huge secret about using a certain feature of Twittad. Plus I am in the process of experimenting with another cool trick that Twittad do not tell you!

After that I intend to start looking at how useful Twittad’s service is from an advertisers point of view, so if you have used Twittad to advertise your site or business be sure to let us know how you got on. Drop a comment in the form below or tweet me @twtr_gator
