Twitter has become one of the most, if not the most, common ways for people to keep in touch and share information. Just by making your usual tweets you can keep friends and family informed of your life and potential job providers aware of your situation.  I know this may be a new concept for some, but you would be well informed to learn how to use Twitter for finding a job.

But, what do you do if you do not have a massively extended network of friends on Twitter?

Use an app like TwitJobSearch.

Twitter has become so globally recognized for connecting people all over the world, many people do not realize the impact Twitter has had on local communities.  If you know where and how to look, Twitter can give you the ability to find fantastic people in your local area, town or city.

In no particular order, here are my top 5 ways to find Twitter users in your town.

1. Twellowhood: The local search function of Twellow.com, think of this as the phone book, or yellow pages for Twitter. You can search on a local level with Twellowhood very easily by way of an excellent clickable map. Use Twellowhood and you will find great tweeps in your city or town but you can also register your Twitter account on Twellowhood to add an extended bio and make your Twitter profile more findable for other users. (Business tweeps, remember to include your keywords in your bio!)

2.  Twitter Search: This is the search that is offered by Twitter itself. You can use the search box on your Twitter home page but will need to use search operators to go local. However, the super helpful Twitter folks provide an excellent advanced search page. Use the “Near this place” option to find tweets from any specific place in the world.

3. Tweetup: “Real world” meetups of people on Twitter normally arranged around a specific interest, place or event. There are organized Tweetups scheduled all of the time by people on Twitter looking to find other people in their area.  Do be careful and safe, but Tweetups are a great fun way to find other Twitter users in your area.

4. iPhone Apps: There is a plethora of ways to find local Twitter users in your area with iPhone Apps made especially for Twitter. Many of the gazillion twitter iphone apps have local search functions that enable you to see tweets from a particular place. The great feature of local Twitter search on the iPhone is that by using your iPhones geo-location, you can find tweets from the place you are actually at when you search. So if you are at an event, you can can find people who are also there and see what they are tweetin’ about the event before deciding to find them and chat face to face.

5. Nearby Tweets: This site finds out where you are based on the information you have and then gives you Twitter users within a radius of you.  This site is beautifully extends Twitters own search engine. With features such as saved locations, adjustable radius of tweets and saved keywords, Nearby Tweets is a fantastic tool for discovering Tweeps local to you.

Since the advent of the internet there have been countless revelations about the best ways to get people to your website and stay there.  Everyone has jumped on board with the thought that having a poll on their website creates both interest and a rooting pride.  If you can learn how to easily run a poll on Twitter using Twtpoll you can encourage many followers to your Twitter account and find out exactly what your followers thoughts and opinions are, giving you a great insight into what tweets, blog posts or product developments you should be actioning to make your public audience and customers happy.

Setting up your poll is as easy as going to the main page for Twtpoll, selecting the option of creating a poll.  Next you must put in your Twitter name and decide on the type of the poll you want to have.  You have the option to create a multiple choice poll, essay poll and several other options.

All you must do at this point is type in the question in one box and then the answers in another box.  You select a few options like the type of answers and how long to keep your poll live. Then you have your poll all ready to go so just click on the link to create your poll.

Granted, if someone was to ask you before the advent of Twitter, “What is Follow Friday?” you may have responded with the common sense logic of it being something related to stalking.  However, in the Twitter era this simply has to do with another tradition that has emerged from the social media age.  Follow Friday on Twitter is all about letting people know who you found interesting today or this week.

So let us say for one minute that you are a big fan of the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA and you like to follow Kevin Durant @KDthunderup .  You have been following for a week or two and have really enjoyed the things that he shares on his Twitter account.  You may tell all of your followers on a Friday that you enjoyed Kevin Durant’s tweets for the last week and recommend your followers to follow him.

To tweet your Follow Friday suggestions simply add the Hashtag #followfriday to your tweet.

Top Tip: If you really want to suggest five people in your Follow Friday avoid putting them all in one tweet! Instead only put one name in one tweet along with the reason why you are recommending them, and don’t forget the #followfriday hashtag.

Follow Friday is all about giving props to the people that you follow so that other people may follow as well.  You can participate at any time on any Friday in the Follow Friday festivities on your Twitter account.  Who knows, maybe someday you will be the person that is being mentioned for Follow Friday.

According to reports today, it would appear there is a clear and obvious way for any third party Twitter app you have allowed to tweet on your account can actually change your profile information.

Your name, location and URL could be changed by an app using three simple ‘command tweets’. I am sure Twitter will tidy this up pretty quickly but till then you really should go check the apps that have this access to your account.

From your Twitter home page:

1. Go to “Settings” tab.
2. Click on “Connections”.
3. Displayed will be all the third party Twitter apps with access to your account, when you approved them and the type of access each app has (ie: read only, read and write).
4. If there any apps you are not familiar with or no longer use you can remove your permission for an app to have access to your account by clicking the “Revoke Access” link.

Any kind of social phenomenon, whether it be a movie, website or miniseries will create its own world, full of its own language and quirks.  Twitter has become just this kind of program with a language all its own that has taken over the internet.  One of these new developments is the use of the #hashtag, but what is a #hashtag?

The #hashtag was created by the users of Twitter without it being an actual creation by the owners and developers of Twitter.  Users started placing the # before the word or phrase to get a special tag placed on the word or phrase.  These #hashtags will make your words or phrases stand out just like tags on any other type of website, and other users reading your tweet will know who, why or what you are tweetin’ about.

So lets say that you want to start a conversation or discussion about the World Series when Major League Baseball slows down.  All you have to do is mark it as the following, #worldseries and you will likely get a lot of people responding to your request for conversation because, (a) your tweet will be seen when ever someone searches Twitter for “world series” tweets. (b) Your followers who see the tweet will imediately know what you are talking about and can easily reply.  Now you know how to get a #hashtag you need to use it frequently to help build your Twitter following.
